Cinco de Plunge O Announcement. Puerto Peñasco to Host 2023 Rocky Point Polar Plunge.
Be Cool. Get Cold. Mexico’s 1st New Year’s Day Polar Plunge Event.
Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico. May 5, 2022. — Cinco de Mayo is mostly a tame marketing holiday in the U.S. But Cinco de Plunge O? This is a wakeup call of the wild for polar bears! (2-legged and 4-legged alike). Mark your 2023 calendars now because January 1 will be fun, jumpstarting the new Rocky Point Polar Plunge.
“We are excited to host this first of its kind event for Rocky Point and all of Mexico,” says Omar Saenz, Director of Tourism for Puerto Peñasco. “What a unique opportunity for people to experience our town having no “off-season” by enjoying a great time with the Rocky Point Polar Plunge.”
There will be activities leading up to the morning of January 1st, when participants plunge into the Sea of Cortez with a water temperature around 58 °F or 14 °C. No, it’s not sub-freezing conditions like polar plunges in Minnesota or Coney Island. But any ”Wimp of the West” knows this is still plenty cold for us.
The event features “Freezin for a Reason,” in raising awareness and funding for Barb’s Dog Rescue in Puerto Peñasco. It is being produced by Thomas Baldrick, a BDR Board Member, and Host of the Rocky Point Podcast. He dove in on the idea for the very same reasons he believes people will love being part of the Rocky Point Polar Plunge.
“My soul has been calling on me to live more boldly,” admits Baldrick. “It was time to stop talking about creating live events and do it. We’ve all heard the ‘New Year New You’ stuff. But the truth is many people are craving a fresh start in life. So, the Rocky Point Plunge can just be great fun. Or, I’m living proof that by taking action, people really can dare to dream and dive into their dreams.”
In helping present the plunge, Mayor Jorge Pivac Carrillo and his administration continue working to make Puerto Peñasco a more inviting destination. “We are thrilled to host the Rocky Point Polar Plunge and help Thomas and our entire community,” says Mayor Pivac. “Growing this special event will create success, pride, tradition, and great new memories. Already, 2023 is looking new and exciting for all of us who love Rocky Point.”
“No matter the weather, we love people enjoying our Puerto Peñasco beaches, certified the cleanest in Mexico,” added Saenz. “So come plunge!”
Specific event details and the event website will be coming soon. Meantime, you can “Like” the Rocky Point Polar Plunge on Facebook to stay updated.
