When you hear the word “Sharpie,” what do you think? Many people may think of the markers. Some may think of Donald Trump including Alabama in his own hurricane forecast. But, when the word (or name) “Sharpie” is mentioned around Barb’s Dog Rescue in Rocky Point, it’s unanimous. Everyone in the know, thinks and feels the same things:

Fear and Heartache.

It’s not that people are afraid of Sharpie. No, not at all. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. This poor dog is afraid of people, all people. To drive home the point and really put it into its proper perspective, Sharpie is even afraid of Barbara Mumaugh. The woman is officially, “A Dog’s Friend.” Sharpie won’t let her near him after years of being cared for at her rescue. In case you’re wondering, Barb named him Sharpie because this handsome guy is a Shar Pei.

You can’t pet him. You can’t feed him treats by hand. You can’t stand still and have him smell you. Sharpie just won’t allow it. He won’t even let you close enough to try. He’s a master of the one step forward and two steps back defense.

I know what you’re thinking. Everyone who has seen Sharpie knows. It makes you wonder and begs the question:

What in the world happened to him?

The truth is, we don’t know why he is traumatized by humans. We do know he was trapped in a horrible facility in Puerto Peñasco which is now closed. Barbara Mumaugh describes the place as being like a concentration camp for dogs. Now that’s bad. Sharpie was lucky to survive, and barely did.

He has gained much weight over the years at Barb’s Dog Rescue. But emotionally, it seems poor Sharpie is still trying to hang on.
